Top Tips For Choosing a BDSM Collar
Many BDSM enthusiasts use collars during play or sometimes even wear them in everyday life. A kink collar is a very beautiful and powerful tool. Some dominants argue that a submissive has to earn their collar first. This means that the sub can get a collar only when they have proven their loyalty and submission. The collaring ceremony is then conducted both as a symbolic ritual and a reward.
In BDSM, collars mark the bond, commitment, and trust a couple shares. They are a symbol of an exceptionally strong relationship. The weight a collar carries in BDSM communities is just as strong as the weight of a marital bond in our society.
So if you as a Dom would like to show your sub that they are really important to you and that what you two have is more than just a little shared bondage fun, you can read this guide to find out how to choose the right collar for your sub. How Do You Use a Collar in BDSM?
There are several different types of collars used in BDSM. Each of these collars has its own meaning.
Collar of Protection
Such a collar is usually given to subs who are currently recovering from a relationship that may have been abusive or failed, or the sub was persecuted and harassed by the Dom. This collar is also used to symbolize to others that the wearer is under protection and may not be spoken to without permission. This way, the sub can relax and feel safe knowing that they are under protection.
Day Collars
These collars are worn on a regular basis to allow the sub to stay connected to their Dom even when they are apart. These collars can be made of any type of material and in any style that suits the owner.
Play Collars
In addition to their symbolic nature, some collars have a practical role, as they can be used to keep a submissive on a leash. Play collars can be used for kinky games both in a BDSM dungeon and at home. Therefore, most collars are leather and have a metal ring or hook embedded in them. This ring should be quite strong to be able to withstand a strong pull. All Anoeses collars meet this criteria. Plus, they are incredibly stylish and durable.
Training Collars
This type of collar not only indicates a special bond between the Dom and the sub but also allows the sub to feel a large part of the control that they have given up. The collar makes it much easier to send signals if the sub is doing something wrong. And a gentle pull on the leash will get them back on track.
Training collars are not as widespread as other types of collars mentioned above, however, they are suitable for a whole range of activities such as slave positions, posture training, and so on and so forth. So-called posture collars are usually designed to allow the Dom to fix the sub’s head during bondage play or grab the sub by the collar when necessary! Doms can also use these collars to fix their sub somewhere if they need some time to themselves or if they want to punish the sub.
Collars of consideration
Not every D/s partnership uses collars of consideration. These collars are typically worn when new partners are deciding whether they want to move to the next step of their relationship and form a permanent D/s couple.
Ownership Identification Collar
This collar is mostly worn by the sub at all times, especially if the Dom potentially wants to have the sub under their control as a permanent possession and expresses this ownership with the collar. It is seen as a constant reminder of the couple’s master and slave status.
Complete Property Collar
If a sub wears this collar, it means that they have passed into their Dom’s complete possession. If the training has been successfully completed and the Dom is completely satisfied with the sub and wants to continue the relationship in the long term, complete property collars are often used to signify this. If the sub leaves the relationship of their own free will at some point, which is of course possible, the collar should be returned to the Dom.
What to Look for When Buying a Kink Collar?
Even if you only use the collar as an ornament or symbol, it should be reasonably comfortable, since doms have to protect their subs from body damage and injuries. On the one hand, if the collar is too tight, it might make a sub feel choked or claustrophobic. On the other hand, if you choose a loose collar, it may get caught on other equipment you use in your play or it may not be as effective.
The choice of a collar depends on your personal preference and on the way you’re planning to use the accessory. Therefore, please note the following:
- Before making the purchase, measure the size of the sub’s neck and take a close look at the sizing guide. The collar’s size has to be just right to prevent the sub from being bruised or suddenly passing out due to lack of oxygen.
- The leather or other material the collar is made of should be supple and comfortable for the skin. Pay attention to sharp edges and sensitivities or possible allergies to the materials used in the collar.
- The collar’s material should be easy to bend since a sub has to take up uncomfortable positions from time to time.
- If possible, D-rings on the collars should be made of metal and not leather.
- Adjustable collars are the best option for most buyers.
- Make sure that the collar does not constrict the skin, especially if it is made of leather and metal.
